President Joe Biden has announced his latest nominee for administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), picking former FAA deputy administrator Michael Whitaker for the position.
Mr. Whitaker is the second person President Biden has nominated for FAA Administrator. Last year, the president nominated Phillip Washington, the CEO of the Denver International Airport, for Senate consideration. Some senators were concerned that Washington only had transit experience and not aviation experience. After almost a year of the nomination being blocked, Washington withdrew from the nomination process this past March.
Senator Ted Cruz, who was opposed to the president’s original nominee, responded to the new nominee, stating, “We must carefully evaluate Mike Whitaker’s qualifications, experience, and temperament to determine whether he is the right person to lead the agency at this critical juncture.”
